Amélie (25th Anniversary Screening)

“Amélie has a strange feeling of absolute harmony... It’s a perfect moment.  A soft light, a scent in the air, the quiet murmur of the city.  A surge of love, an urge to help mankind overcomes her.”

We're toasting French cinema (on Bastille Day!) with one of our all-time favourites, a film that is equal parts romantic and magical, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s delightfully charming AMELIE. Released in 2001, this endearing modern French classic about an impish, lonesome young woman in Paris remains one of the most successful international releases of all time, is roundly embraced by cinephiles the world over, and happens to have one of the most beloved scores (Yann Tiersen) in recent memory. It also introduced the world to the thoroughly enchanting Audrey Tatou, the pleasures of the crack of a spoon against the brittle, caramelized top of an ice-cold crème brûlée, and the magic of traveling garden gnomes. With Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus, and Jamel Debbouze.

"It's hard not to fall under the spell of this moonstruck romance." (Rolling Stone)
