Nuremberg

The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon), have the task of ensuring the Nazi regime answers for the unveiled horrors of the Holocaust while a US Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek) is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Herman Göring (Russell Crowe).

"Well-paced, expertly performed, and an urgent call to stand up to fascism, Nuremberg is a powerful, sweeping story of the attempt to bring an unthinkable evil to justice." (Empire Magazine)

"You can feel archival poring that went into the research. It lends authenticity and intellectual rigour to this extraordinary, century-defining event. Crowe and co do the rest." (Time Out)

"This movie isn’t consumed with self-importance, despite some obvious parallels to current events. This is entertainment that happens to be rooted in reality about a day of reckoning the likes of which the world hasn’t seen in a long, long time" (Leonard Maltin)

"'Nuremberg' works best when it’s loud, urgent, and almost hysterically earnest in its messaging, not because it’s a particularly new message, but because it once again feels like something someone must scream from the rooftops." (AV Club)

Bugonia

Oscar-winning filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (POOR THINGS, THE FAVOURITE, THE LOBSTER) brings his signature, bold and irreverent storytelling style to BUGONIA, an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan's 2003 South Korean film SAVE THE GREEN PLANET! This darkly satiric comedy thriller about a pair of conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company because they are convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth, finds the director re-uniting with muse Emma Stone (who took home her second Oscar for her memorable turn as Bella in POOR THINGS) and Jesse Plemons (KINDS OF KINDESS). With Alicia Silverstone, Aidan Delbis.

BUGONIA is currently nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, including for Best Film (Musical or Comedy), as well as for performances from Emma Stone (Best Actress -Musical or Comedy Film) and Jesse Plemons (Best Actor -Musical or Comedy Film).

"Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are at the top of their game in 'Bugonia', a bonkers black comedy that applies director Yorgos Lanthimos' whip-smart method to modern society's madness." (Rotten Tomatoes)

"This takes me back to [Yorgos Lanthimos'] 'Dogtooth' in the bold weirdness of it and the challenge of, "Are you going to go with us on this trip or not?" (FilmWeek)

"The characters might be demented, but 'Bugonia' is a crueller, funnier, sharper proposition, more grounded and gritty than the wigged-out weirdness of the film on which it is based." (Guardian UK)

"Perhaps this nihilism will prove too trenchant and reactive for some viewers. That’s perfectly fine: Sometimes it feels good to scream for help, even if it will never come." (Salon.com)

Father Mother Sister Brother

Structured as a narrative triptych, Jim Jarmusch's latest FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is a comedy-drama rooted in observational austerity, quietly exploring stories of estranged adult children attempting to connect with their emotionally distant parents across different locations (US, Dublin, Paris). The trio of stories reveal the melancholy, humor, and complexities within family bonds through understated dialogue and shared moments. The film includes a stellar ensemble, and has Jarmusch re-teaming with TOM WAITS (DOWN BY LAW, NIGHT ON EARTH) and Adam Driver (PATERSON, THE DEAD DON'T DIE) in this character study of generational gaps, inherited burdens, and the search for understanding. With Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps.

Winner of the Golden Lion, Venice Film Festival 2025

"Wry, emotional and off-kilter, Father Mother Sister Brother is the antithesis of a Hallmark Christmas movie, and so much the better for it." (AARP Movies for Grownups)

"If you're tracking the happiness of generations, it feels like Jarmusch definitely feels like everybody's happiness has gone a lot downhill since their parents who are doing glamorous, interesting things." (FilmWeek)

"It’s a wondrous interlude, and Jarmusch at his best." (New York Times)

"Family can be hell, but the only thing worse is when they’re no longer with us." (Los Angeles Times)

The film follows their journey from meeting at an impersonator gig to building a family and a celebrated local act, blending heartfelt highs with dramatic lows with resilience, humor, and lots of Diamond's music.

Oldboy (4K Restoration)

In anticipation of master filmmaker Park Chan-Wook’s new film NO OTHER CHOICE, we thought the time was right to revisit the filmmaker's 2003 masterpiece, OLDBOY, which was recently restored and remastered in stunning 4K.

A violent, offbeat, and somewhat Shakesperean tale of punishment and vengeance, OLDBOY ("Oldeuboi") screened in competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, winning the highly coveted Grand prix award. The film is centered on Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a husband and father with a reputation for womanizing. For reasons he doesn't understand, he finds himself held captive and locked in a prison cell with no idea of his crime or who has put him there. With just a small television as his only link to the outside world and a daily ration of fried dumplings as his only sustenance, he struggles to keep his mind and body intact. When he learns through a news report that his wife has been killed, he begins a long and difficult project of digging an escape tunnel with a pair of chopsticks. Before he can finish Oh Dae-su is released, with as little explanation as when he was locked up, and he's soon given a wad of money and a cellular phone by a bum on the street. Emotionally stunted but physically strong after 15 years in prison, he struggles to unravel the secret of who is responsible for locking him up, what happened to his wife and daughter - and how to best get revenge against his captors.

Winner of the Cannes' Film Festival's Grand Prix award in 2003, this masterful and violent revenge thriller has grown in popularity among discerning audiences, achieving a near cult-like status (as well as a remake, courtesy of Spike Lee in 2013).

"Both brutal and lyrical, writer-director Park Chan-wook's existential nail-biter has torture scenes that will have you avoiding dentists, sushi bars and badly appointed hotel rooms." (New York Daily News)

"Shakespearean in its violence, OLDBOY also calls up nightmare images of spiritual and physical isolation that are worthy of Samuel Beckett or Dostoyevsky." (Wall Street Journal)

It Was Just An Accident

Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi's IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT seems to mine much of its inspiration from his own life as a noted political dissident, with its plot centered on a former political prisoner who believes he has found his torturer. The film follows Vahed, an unassuming Azerbaijani mechanic and former prisoner who has a chance encounter with Eghbal, an Iranian man he strongly suspects to be his sadistic jailhouse captor on account of his wooden leg. Vahed gathers other ex-prisoners, including a photographer and a couple on their wedding day, to confirm Eghbal's identity and decide if and how how to seek revenge.

The narrative explores themes of trauma, the morality of revenge, and how different people cope with systemic abuse, often using a blend of thriller, road comedy, dark social satire, and moral debate. At its core, Panahi's latest is a deeply felt moral thriller, where high stakes tension combines with unexpected flurries of humor and thoughtful, sometimes devastating questions regarding persecution and revenge. With Vahid Mobasseri, Mariam Afshari, Ebrahim Azizi, Hadis Pakbaten, Majid Panahi, Mohamad Ali Elyasmehr.

Cannes Film Festival Winner - Palme d'Or

"'It Was Just an Accident' plays like an ideal melding of the filmmaker Panahi was and the filmmaker he’s been forced to become. It’s an endlessly fascinating and extraordinarily powerful work." (New York Magazine / VULTURE)

"The first film Panahi made after his 2022 arrest, the most recent of his many conflicts with the Iranian government, 'It Was Just an Accident' is both typically uncompromising and, for long stretches, disarmingly funny." (The Reveal)

"Bursting with humanity and dark humor, it’s a sharply well-acted, written and directed modern thriller that grapples with urgently existential questions of justice, violence and resistance." (Seattle Times)

"If anyone has the right to make a revenge fantasy, it’s Jafar Panahi. And yet, this movie isn’t that. Panahi doesn’t make statement films; he makes question films, designed to instigate soul-searching and debate." (Washington Post)

"Panahi reaches some kind of terrible career high. This is a movie born out of a lifetime that no one should have been forced to endure. And yet, the film world is stronger for the suffering." (Globe and Mail)

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You

A missing patient. A demonic hamster. A cosmic hole in the bedroom ceiling. For Linda (Rose Byrne, who is receiving serious Oscar buzz following her win at the Golden Globes), life is a series of surreal catastrophes pointing to her failure as a working mother, and even her therapist (Conan O’Brien) is getting sick of her. Displaced in a purgatorial motel while her husband (Christian Slater) is away on business, Linda turns to weed, white wine, and holotropic breathing to cope with the bottomless void of need that is her daughter’s mysterious illness.

Shot on 35mm film, this darkly humorous psychological drama from writer-director-actor Mary Bronstein (YEAST) immerses us in Linda’s unraveling mental state as her heightened world collapses on itself. Drenched in anxiety and desperate fury, Rose Byrne’s top-notch performance is complemented by impeccable comedic timing from editor Lucian Johnston (MIDSOMMAR). Through extreme close-ups, a nerve-wracking soundscape, eerie ambient lighting, and visceral practical effects, IF I HAD LEGS I'D KICK YOU reflects the frantic perspective of a mother at the end of her rope.

"'If I Had Legs' aims high, and hits harder than most this year – a film guaranteed to knock the breath out of you." (Little White Lies)

"Anyone who checks out early will rob themselves of not only the most electric film of the year, but a lead performance that feels singular, towering, even generational." (Globe and Mail)

Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. Hoping to reunite with his son, he travels to Recife during Carnival, but soon realizes that the city is not the safe haven he was expecting.

Winner of Best Director (Kleber Mendonça Filho) and Best Actor in Cannes, THE SECRET AGENT is currently nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Actor Drama, Best Foreign Language Film, and is Brazil’s pick for Oscar submission.

“‘The Secret Agent’ suggests something more consequential with its gripping portrait of political resistance: that survival is a matter of both watching and watching over one another.” (Washington Post)

“The period detail is a marvel, the era’s music a most excellent groove, and the cast a top-to-bottom wowzer of interesting faces and eclectic bodies.” (Austin Chronicle)

“This smart, brutal, often funny thriller uses the travails of one ordinary man to capture a reactionary era in its daily realities and surreal absurdities, its public cruelty and private decency.” (NPR)

“Fiery and relentlessly paced (its 158 minutes don’t contain a minute of bloat), the political thriller pivoting around themes of paranoia and resistance feels perfectly tuned to the moment.” (Globe and Mail)

Rental Family

Set in modern-day Tokyo, RENTAL FAMILY follows an American actor (Oscar winner Brendan Fraser) who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese "rental family" agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection.

"The main reason to see it is Brendan Fraser. He is perfectly cast in this role." (FilmWeek)

"'Rental Family' might be a modestly likable, often uneven movie about a fictional American actor in Japan, but it’s also a thoroughly fascinating movie about a very real actor in the midst of one of the strangest careers I’ve witnessed." (Vulture)

"This is a beautiful and contemplative film, with lovely messaging and a couple of sly twists." (RogerEbert.com)

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Final Screening)

One of the most exciting aspects of the Park Theatre's re-opening is the new 4K projector and screen, which offers the perfect opportunity to revisit films known for their lavish production and sound design and lush, visual cinemscapes.

One such title is Peter Weir's Oscar-winner MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, which was digitally restored in 2025. Known for films including WITNESS, THE TRUMAN SHOW, and DEAD POETS SOCIETY, Weir's 2003 sea-faring epic is adapted from author Patrick O'Brian's popular 20-book Aubrey-Maturin series of historical fiction, which captures the spirit of early 19th-century naval life and warfare. Set in1805 aboard the H.M.S. Surprise, the story revolves around the audacious and brash Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) and his trusted friend, the ship's scholarly surgeon, Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), as they are ordered to hunt down and capture a powerful French vessel off the South American coast. Though Napoleon is winning the war and the men and their crew face an onslaught of obstacles, including their own internal battles, "Lucky Jack" is determined that nothing will stop the Surprise from completing its mission. With Max Pirkis, Billy Boyd,

"We feel ourselves to be in good company with these men, and strangely jealous of their packed and salted lives." (The New Yorker)

"Oak solid and unsinkable, 'Master And Commander' is old-fashioned entertainment crafted with considerable care." (Empire Magazine)

"A gentleman's action movie." (Salon.com)

"'Master and Commander' is grand and glorious, and touching in its attention to its characters." (Roger Ebert)

Song Sung Blue

Based on a true story, of Mike and Claire Sardinia, two down-on-their-luck musicians (Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, in a Golden Globe-nominated performance) a couple who found love and success as a Neil Diamond tribute band, "Lightning & Thunder," in Milwaukee. The film follows their journey from meeting at an impersonator gig to building a family and a celebrated local act, blending heartfelt highs with dramatic lows with resilience, humor, and lots of Diamond's music.

"You could argue that Song Sung Blue hits every beat predictably. But isn’t that what you want sometimes?" (TIME Magazine)

"You don’t have to be a Neil Diamond fan to like this movie--you don’t even have to respond to the callback in "Sweet Caroline." I loved it." (Leonard Maltin)

"I actually had my eyes closed and mouth open at certain key points, and was grabbing the seat in front of me with both fists. It also may yet prove that, yes, Hugh Jackman really is the greatest showman." (Guardian UK)

Sentimental Value

Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father -- and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.

The latest tragi-comedy / family drama from acclaimed Danish-Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier finds him re-teaming with actress Renate Reinsve (THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD) in SENTIMENTAL VALUE, which is one of the most lauded films of 2025. It won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for 8 Golden Globe Awards, and won Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, Stellan Skarsgård.

"A fantastic showcase for Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård, and another strong piece from director Joachim Trier, this is a moving drama that lingers long." (Empire Magazine)

"Stellan Skarsgård is magnificent as the charismatic, unreliable Gustav, but the film’s secret weapon is Elle Fanning’s hapless US starlet." (Observer UK)

"Better (and far cheaper) than group therapy, Sentimental Value is a thoughtful and moving exploration of the long tail of family dynamics." (Time Out)

"Trier’s film overflows with the kind of genuinely impactful potential that we go to the movies for, the type that leaves us feeling understood more than it makes us feel good." (Salon.com)

Marty Supreme

In one of the most lauded performances of 2025, Timothée Chalamet stars in writer-director Josh Safdie's (UNCUT GEMS, GOOD TIME) MARTY SUPREME as Marty Mauser, a charismatic yet deeply flawed reluctant who harbours a singular, dream no one respects - to become the world's greatest tennis table champion. In his obsessive pursuit of greatness, Marty goes to hell and back and falls into frantic hustles, an affair with a movie star, and countless schemes to fund his ambition. MARTY SUPREME ably showcases Safdie's trademark, hyper-kinetic and at times rapid fire style of story-telling. With Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler the Creator, Odessa A'zion, Fran Drescher and Sandra Bernhard.

"The movies can be a wonderfully amoral medium, and I found myself liking Marty Mauser -- and not just liking him, but actually rooting for him to succeed. It takes more than a good actor to pull that off. It takes one of the greats." (NPR)

"For all the trademark Safdie unease, 'Marty Supreme' remains an enormously good time at the cinema. The 150 minutes speed by as we encounter an array of brilliantly cast cameos." (Irish Times)

"Chalamet is fantastic in this role. It may very well be his best work yet, in a career filled with excellent performances." (New York Magazine / Vulture)

"Certain to be rated the greatest 2.5-hour ping-pong movie ever, Marty Supreme takes a tired formula only to pull it apart and reassemble it with wicked intent, like a psychotic toddler experimenting on his sister’s hapless doll." (Wall Street Journal)

Fantasia

One of the most exciting aspects of the new Park Theatre is getting the chance to enjoy our new, state of he art equipment equipment - including a 4K laser projector! It's all the excuse we need to  re-visit beloved the classics and fan favourites that really come to life on the big screen.

Regarded by many as Walt Disney's masterpiece, FANTASIA predicted the modern music video by offering nine animated segments that were directly inspired by compressed versions of well-known classical music without necessarily adhering to the original composers' intent. Featuring the work of the Disney studio's artists at the height of their powers, and coupled with conductor Leopold Stokowski's musical arrangements, FANTASIA's fanciful interpretations include a semi-abstract rendition of Bach's 'Toccata and Fugue in D Minor'; water sprites, dancing mushrooms, and other creatures in Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker Suite'; Mickey Mouse as the title character in Paul Dukas' 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'; dinosaurs roaming a primordial Earth in Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'; frolicking mythical creatures in Beethoven's 'The Pastoral Symphony'; ballet-dancing ostriches, hippopotamuses, and alligators in Ponchielli's 'Dance of the Hours'; and the rise and fall of the dark demon Chernobog in Mussorgsky's' Night on Bald Mountain' and Schubert's "Ave Maria." Deems Taylor's narration (and brief words by Stokowski and Mickey) provide the only spoken words in the film.

"A landmark in animation (and a huge influence on the medium of music video), Disney's Fantasia is a relentlessly inventive blend of the classics with phantasmagorical images." (Rotten Tomatoes)

"The words most used to describe "Fantasia," besides the conventional "beautiful" and "wonderful" were "path-breaking" and "courageous." The phrase "courageous beyond belief" would be even more accurate." (LA Times)
