Arco

Set in the year 2027, French comic book artists turned filmmaker Ugo Beinvenu's ARCO tells the story of a 10-year-old girl, Iris, who sees a mysterious boy wearing a rainbow jumpsuit falling from the sky. It's Arco. He comes from a distant, idyllic future where time travel is possible. Iris takes him in and will do whatever it takes to help him return home. The  star-studded English voice cast includes Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman, Andy Samberg and Mark Ruffalo The film blends Ghibli-esque wonder with serious themes about humanity's future and connection to nature, and is perfect for animation lovers of all ages.

"Like a cross between a Studio Ghibli joint and “Interstellar,” “Arco,” by the French comic-book artist turned filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu, strikes a lovely balance between fantastical kid-friendly wholesomeness and real-world bleakness." (New York Times)

"'Arco' is a children’s adventure set in world that’s literally on fire, which makes the moments of childlike wonder and connection all the more endearing and vital." (Slant Magazine)

"When filmmakers attempt to replicate Ghibli, they often come off leaden and overwritten—“Mononoke” made too many think that Hayao never had a sense of humor—so it’s nice to see a filmmaker who values whimsy as much as message." (RogerEbert.com)

Moulin Rouge! (25th Anniversary)

Join us at the Park Theatre for the third film from visionary Australian director Baz Luhrmann, MOULIN ROUGE!, a hyper-stylized, dramatic romp that turns the conventions of the musical genre onto its (glittering) head by mixing a period romance with anachronistic dialogue and songs, reminiscent of the approach he utilized (with great success) in ROMEO+JULIET.

Ewan McGregor stars as Christian, a young Englishman who leaves behind his bourgeois father during the French belle époque of the late 1890s to seek his fortunes in the bohemian underworld of Montmartre. Here, Christian meets the absinthe- and alcohol-addicted artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), who introduces him to a world of sex, drugs, music, theater, and the scandalous dance known as the cancan at the Moulin Rouge, a decadent dance hall, brothel, and theater that’s the brainchild of Harold ZidlerHowever (Jim Broadbent), and quickly becomes completely infatuated with the beautiful singer and courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman, in a career-high). However, she has been promised by the manager to a Duke – in return for funding his next production. As the young lovers meet in secret, Satine’s wedding day draws closer but she hides a fatal secret from both Christian and the Duke. The film seamlessly weaves contemporary songs by Nirvana, Madonna, the Beatles, and Queen into a sparkling confection, loosely based on the opera “Orpheus in the Underworld.” With Richard Roxburgh, Kylie Minogue.

“A love-it-or-hate-it experience, MOULIN ROUGE! is all style, all giddy, over-the-top spectacle. But it’s also daring in its vision and wildly original.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“MOULIN ROUGE! is a tour de force of artifice, a dazzling pastiche of musical and visual elements at the service of a blatantly artificial story.” (Variety)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

“Random thoughts for Valentine’s Day, 2004…. Today is a holiday invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap.”

Featuring the uniquely imaginative and whimsical visual aesthetic of director Michel Gondry, a story from the genius mind of Charlie Kaufman (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH), and career-high performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as a couple whose relationship is disappearing before them, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND holds a special place as one of cinema’s most unusual romance (or anti-romance?) films ever made. This film is a singular work of non-linear cinematic poetry that walks a magical and heartfelt line between hilarity and heartbreak - in a dimension all its own. Also starring Tom Wilkinson, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood and David Cross.

"It's a very Kaufmanesque narrative experiment, technically ingenious and sophisticated. It also looks like some lost comedy idea by Philip K Dick; you could call this film We Can Forget It for You Retail." (Guardian)

"A surprisingly bittersweet love story at heart, Eternal Sunshine values the sum of experience, which in this case means a thorns-and-all openness to romantic possibilities." (AV Club)

"The result is a cinematic vagueness that makes the film less aesthetic yet more persuasive. This is how dreams really look: like reality, only less so." (The Atlantic)

Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie

Almost 20 years into their fruitless quest to book their band a gig at a hallowed Toronto venue, co-creators Matt (writer-director Matt Johnson) and Jay (writer-composer Jay McCarrol) decide it’s time to pull out all the stops. Displaced in the past, these serial bumblers inadvertently wreak havoc on the timeline, dramatically (and hilariously) rewriting their futures.

Overflowing with pop culture references, wild gags, and inspired set pieces, NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE is gloriously ridiculous, endlessly clever, and riotously entertaining. This one is for all the deranged dreamers out there.

Romeo + Juliet (30th Anniversary Screening)

"My only love sprung from my only hate."

Join us at the Rio Theatre on Sunday, February 15, for a 30th Anniversary Galentine's Day-ish(?) screening of Baz Luhrmann's iconic, very contemporary and highly stylized take on William Shakespeare's classic romantic tragedythe Montagues and Capulets have moved their ongoing feud to the sweltering, yet very hip, suburb of Verona Beach, where Romeo and Juliet fall in love and secretly wed. Though the film is visually modern, the bard's dialogue remains. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes lead a stellar ensemble cast that includes John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Paul Rudd, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino, Brian Dennehy, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Miriam Margolyes.

"Luhrmann's gleefully cinematic version of the play is so relentlessly inventive and innovative, it takes 20 minutes to get a grasp on how appropriate is his approach to the material." (Time Out)

The Princess Bride (Rob Reiner tribute)

My name is Inigo Montoya.
You killed my father.
Prepare to die.

Join us at the Park Theatre as we pay tribute to the late, great filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner by dimming the lights and firing up the projector for a screening of  The Princess Bride.

Based on Goldman's 1973 novel of the same name, Rob Reiner's THE PRINCESS BRIDE has taken on a life of its own as one of the most beloved (and infinitely quotable) fairy tales to ever hit the big screen, enchanting audiences of all ages since its release in 1987. THE PRINCESS BRIDE follows the story of a kindly grandfather (Peter Falk) who reads his oft-protesting grandson (Fred Savage) a fairytale about giants, wizards, swordplay, Rodents of Unusual Size, true love, and perfect breasts. (And yes...There's even some kissing.) Starring Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, André the Giant, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Peter Cooke, Carol Kane, and more.

James Cameron's "Titanic" is an epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic; the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. She was the most luxurious liner of her era -- the "ship of dreams" -- which ultimately carried over 1,500 people to their death in the ice cold waters of the North Atlantic in the early hours of April 15, 1912. The Secret Agent

Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. Hoping to reunite with his son, he travels to Recife during Carnival, but soon realizes that the city is not the safe haven he was expecting.

Winner of Best Director (Kleber Mendonça Filho) and Best Actor in Cannes, THE SECRET AGENT recently won two Golden Globe Awards (Best Actor Drama, Best Non-English Language Film) and is currently nominated for four Oscars.

"'The Secret Agent' suggests something more consequential with its gripping portrait of political resistance: that survival is a matter of both watching and watching over one another." (Washington Post)

"The period detail is a marvel, the era’s music a most excellent groove, and the cast a top-to-bottom wowzer of interesting faces and eclectic bodies." (Austin Chronicle)

"This smart, brutal, often funny thriller uses the travails of one ordinary man to capture a reactionary era in its daily realities and surreal absurdities, its public cruelty and private decency." (NPR)

"Fiery and relentlessly paced (its 158 minutes don’t contain a minute of bloat), the political thriller pivoting around themes of paranoia and resistance feels perfectly tuned to the moment." (Globe and Mail)

The Handmaiden (10th Anniversary Screening)

From Park Chan-wook, the celebrated director of NO OTHER CHOICE OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE, THIRST and STOKER, comes a ravishing new crime drama inspired by the novel 'Fingersmith' by British author Sarah Waters. Having transposed the story to 1930s-era colonial Korea and Japan, Park presents a gripping and sensual tale of a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but who is secretly involved in a conman's plot to defraud her of her large inheritance. Powered by remarkable performances from Kim Min-hee (RIGHT NOW, WRONG THEN) as Lady Hideko, Ha Jung-woo (THE CHASER) as the conman who calls himself the Count and sensational debut actress Kin Tae-ri as the maid Sookee, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements of its source material and combines it with Park Chan-wook's singular vision and energy to create an unforgettable viewing experience. (Please note: This film screens in Korean with English subtitles.)

"Park Chan-wook is a master of classy trash... There's artistry in his filmmaking, but also a lot of blood, plenty of sick humor and moments of sheer lunacy. 'THE HANDMAIDEN' ranks among his best films yet." (Chicago Sun-Times)

"Park's 'Handmaiden' is a great big chocolate box of a movie in which a rich and satisfying narrative is enlivened by some piquant erotica and the sharp tang of politics." (The Globe & Mail)

"Commercial and arthouse audiences alike will either thrill to its stylized potboiler elements or swoon over the opiate influence of Park's signature aesthetic beauty." (Variety)

"The art of the tease is rarely as refined as in 'The Handmaiden." (New York Times)

"THE HANDMAIDEN is just pure cinema, a dizzying, disturbing fable of love and betrayal that overloads the viewer with luxurious imagery, while never losing track of the tragic, human core of its story." (The Atlantic)

THE HANDMAIDEN "Ah-Ga-Sse" (Park Chan-wook, 2016 / 145 mins / 18A / Korean with English subtitles) In 1930s Korea, in the period of Japanese occupation, a new girl (Sookee) is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress (Hideko) who lives a secluded life on a large countryside estate with her domineering Uncle (Kouzuki). Fantasia

One of the most exciting aspects of the new Park Theatre is getting the chance to enjoy our new, state of he art equipment equipment - including a 4K laser projector! It's all the excuse we need to  re-visit beloved the classics and fan favourites that really come to life on the big screen.

Regarded by many as Walt Disney's masterpiece, FANTASIA predicted the modern music video by offering nine animated segments that were directly inspired by compressed versions of well-known classical music without necessarily adhering to the original composers' intent. Featuring the work of the Disney studio's artists at the height of their powers, and coupled with conductor Leopold Stokowski's musical arrangements, FANTASIA's fanciful interpretations include a semi-abstract rendition of Bach's 'Toccata and Fugue in D Minor'; water sprites, dancing mushrooms, and other creatures in Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker Suite'; Mickey Mouse as the title character in Paul Dukas' 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'; dinosaurs roaming a primordial Earth in Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'; frolicking mythical creatures in Beethoven's 'The Pastoral Symphony'; ballet-dancing ostriches, hippopotamuses, and alligators in Ponchielli's 'Dance of the Hours'; and the rise and fall of the dark demon Chernobog in Mussorgsky's' Night on Bald Mountain' and Schubert's "Ave Maria." Deems Taylor's narration (and brief words by Stokowski and Mickey) provide the only spoken words in the film.

"A landmark in animation (and a huge influence on the medium of music video), Disney's Fantasia is a relentlessly inventive blend of the classics with phantasmagorical images." (Rotten Tomatoes)

"The words most used to describe "Fantasia," besides the conventional "beautiful" and "wonderful" were "path-breaking" and "courageous." The phrase "courageous beyond belief" would be even more accurate." (LA Times)

The Choral

1916. As war rages on the Western Front, the Choral Society in Ramsden, Yorkshire has lost most of its men to the army. The Choral’s ambitious committee, determined to press ahead, decides to recruit local young males to swell their ranks. They must also engage a new chorus master, and despite their suspicions that he has something to hide, their best bet seems to be Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) – driven, uncompromising, and recently returned from a career in Germany. As conscription papers start to arrive, the whole community discovers that the best response to the chaos that is laying waste to their lives is to make music together. With Mark Addy.

"A re-envisioning of Elgar’s Catholic devotional that ties it in a profound and moving fashion to the time and place of The Choral, and the underlying idea that a little music, a little companionship, can’t stop the horror but it can provide a respite." (Austin Chronicle)

"The Brits do this kind of light and dark juggling act better than almost anybody, and the filmmakers and their cast deliver a movie that's perfect for viewing on a lazy Sunday afternoon at the movie theater." (Boston Globe)

"['The Choral'} is beautifully crafted and performed. The music is glorious. What more could one ask for? (Leonard Maltin)

"A moving account of music as a way of coping with war, as well as keeping it at bay." (New York Times)

The Voice of Hind Rajab

Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania's THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB skillfully blends documentary and dramatic narrative elements to tell the true, and truly harrowing story behind an incident experienced in 2024 when volunteers at the Palestine Red Crescent Society stayed on the phone with a 6-year-old girl who was herself trapped inside a car in war-torn Gaza. Lauded at film festivals around the world, it took the coveted Silver Lion Prize at the Venice Film Festival and was recently nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Non-English Language Film category. THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB is Tunisia's official submission for this year's Oscars, and is currently nominated for Best International Feature.

"About as powerful as cinema gets. Its hybrid blend of documentary audio and devastating dramatisation is heart-wrenchingly, shatteringly effective." (Empire Magazine)

"'The Voice of Hind Rajab’'s release during the ongoing humanitarian crisis moves it beyond documentation and into an essential act of intervention." (Time Out)

"The actors on screen react in real-time with the recordings of that harrowing day, and the effect is at once painfully direct, and profound." (NPR)

"Visually, this widescreen film is a virtuoso exercise in (mostly) single-location filmmaking." (New York Times)

"Discomfiting and emotionally devastating in the extreme, Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania’s dramatised account of Hind’s death is utterly essential film-making." (London Evening Standard)

"The shrewd visual trickery and sleight-of-hand editing that collapse the distance between the original series’ zero-budget aesthetic and this more comfortably subsidized version can’t actually erase the passage of time. If anything, they deepen it. Content collapsed." (The Ringer)

Kung Fu Hustle (25th Anniversary Screening)

Gong Hei Faat Choy!

We are celebrating the start of Lunar New Year on Tuesday, February 17 (Year of the Horse!) with a 25th Anniversary screening of Hong Kong martial arts superstar Stephen Chow's action-packed comedy blockbuster KUNG FU HUSTLE.

Triple threat Chow (who co-wrote, directed, and stars in the film) crafted a cinematic gem that blends seamless special effects in a high-flying martial arts epic set in early '40s China. The story follows hapless Sing (Chow) and his dim-witted pal who try to scam the residents of Shanghai's Pig Sty Alley into thinking they're members of the dreaded "Axe Gang." When the real gangsters return to restore their fearsome reputation, they must contend with the three legendary retired kung-fu masters who quietly live in the decrepit neighborhood - and don't take kindly to strangers. Also starring Feng Xiaogang, Chan Kwok-kwan, Yu Xing, Dong Zhihua and Chiu Chi-ling.

Sentimental Value

Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father -- and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.

The latest tragi-comedy / family drama from acclaimed Danish-Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier finds him re-teaming with actress Renate Reinsve (THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD) in SENTIMENTAL VALUE, which is one of the most lauded films of 2025. It won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for 8 Golden Globe Awards, winning Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (Skarsgård). The film is currently nominated for a whopping 9 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Actress (Reinsve) and Best Director. With Elle Fanning.

"A fantastic showcase for Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård, and another strong piece from director Joachim Trier, this is a moving drama that lingers long." (Empire Magazine)

"Stellan Skarsgård is magnificent as the charismatic, unreliable Gustav, but the film’s secret weapon is Elle Fanning’s hapless US starlet." (Observer UK)

"Better (and far cheaper) than group therapy, Sentimental Value is a thoughtful and moving exploration of the long tail of family dynamics." (Time Out)

"Trier’s film overflows with the kind of genuinely impactful potential that we go to the movies for, the type that leaves us feeling understood more than it makes us feel good." (Salon.com)

Hard Boiled (4K Restoration)

Happy Lunar New Year! We are kicking off the Year of the Horse with one of the most iconic films in  newly restored "Golden Princess" films in the Hong Kong Cinema Classics series that were restored and remastered in 2025, John Woo's iconic HARD BOILED.

Legendary Hong Kong director Woo's kinetic extravaganza HARD BOILED thrilled critics and audiences around the world with its over-the-top, highly stylized action sequences and choreographed gunplay when it was released in 1992, and it is even more stunning over 30 years later thanks to the gorgeous restopration treatment it has received as part of GKIDS new series celebrating classic Hong Kong cinema. (Fun fact: Back in the day, the Rio Theatre was itself a Golden Princess venue - look up at our neon facade next time you come by!)

Mobsters are smuggling guns into Hong Kong. The police orchestrate a raid at a teahouse where an ace detective loses his partner. Meanwhile, the two main gun smugglers are having a war over territory, and a young new gun is enlisted to wipe out informants and overcome barriers to growth. The detective, acting from inside sources, gets closer to the ring leaders and eventually must work with the inside man directly. With Chow Yun-fat, Bowie Lam, Chiu-wai, Tony Leung, Teresa Mo, Philip Chan, Phillip Chung-Fung Kwok

"A supercharged thriller." (Time Out)

Displaced in the past, these serial bumblers inadvertently wreak havoc on the timeline, dramatically (and hilariously) rewriting their futures.

Overflowing with pop culture references, wild gags, and inspired set pieces, NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE is gloriously ridiculous, endlessly clever, and riotously entertaining. This one is for all the deranged dreamers out there.

"The shrewd visual trickery and sleight-of-hand editing that collapse the distance between the original series’ zero-budget aesthetic and this more comfortably subsidized version can’t actually erase the passage of time. If anything, they deepen it. Content collapsed." (The Ringer)

"A thrilling, roof-shaking blast." (A thrilling, roof-shaking blast." (Slate)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Set against 19th-century China's breathtaking landscape, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON is the action-packed, box office "wuxia" blockbuster from acclaimed director Ang Lee (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, SENSE & SENSIBILITY). Released in 2000, the film was an overwhelming critical and commercial success that was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and winning three - at the time, it received most nominations ever or a non-English-language film.

Featuring stunning martial arts choreography by Yuen Wo Ping (THE MATRIX), gorgeous cinematography, action, romance, adventure, and knockout performances from Chow-Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Ziyi Zhang.

"A lot of time has passed since “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” first stormed festivals, theaters and the gates of Hollywood itself in 2000. Returning to the big screen in a digital 4K restoration, the movie has lost none of its dreamy beauty or hypnotic power, and that power still builds as assuredly and methodically as ever." (LA Times)

"Watching Michelle Yeoh in both [EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE] films, particularly within the context of the awards season campaign she’s currently undergoing, is to see two bookends to the paradox that is her career. “Crouching Tiger” boasted great performances, but it was Yeoh who shined the brightest. And yet, her current “Everything Everywhere” victory lap has correctly framed her as a revered global star who only now has been allowed to fully extend her limbs." (New York Times)
