Mildred Pierce
When Mildred Pierce's wealthy husband leaves her for another woman, Mildred (Joan Crawford, in her signature performance) decides to raise her two daughters on her own. Despite Mildred's financial successes in the restaurant business, her oldest daughter, Veda, resents her mother for degrading their social status. In the midst of a police investigation after the death of her second husband, Mildred must evaluate her own freedom and her complicated relationship with her daughter, Veda (Ann Blyth).
Directed by Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA, WHITE CHRISTMAS), this quintessentially melodramatic noir of the era saw Hollywood legend Crawford staging one of the greatest comebacks* of all time, re-launching her career after being labelled "box office poison," and taking home an Oscar for her efforts.
It goes without saying that Crawford's second comeback in 1961, which saw her starring alongside arch-rival Bette Davis in WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?, after a nearly 20-year absence, is (probably) the greatest Hollywood comeback of all time.
"The archetypal Joan Crawford movie." (Chicago Reader)
"Crawford is always mesmerizing, steely and teary as she is manipulated, accused of murder and circled by men who are stolid...crass...or emollient." (The Times UK)
