Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Final Screening)

One of the most exciting aspects of the Park Theatre's re-opening is the new 4K projector and screen, which offers the perfect opportunity to revisit films known for their lavish production and sound design and lush, visual cinemscapes.

One such title is Peter Weir's Oscar-winner MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, which was digitally restored in 2025. Known for films including WITNESS, THE TRUMAN SHOW, and DEAD POETS SOCIETY, Weir's 2003 sea-faring epic is adapted from author Patrick O'Brian's popular 20-book Aubrey-Maturin series of historical fiction, which captures the spirit of early 19th-century naval life and warfare. Set in1805 aboard the H.M.S. Surprise, the story revolves around the audacious and brash Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) and his trusted friend, the ship's scholarly surgeon, Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), as they are ordered to hunt down and capture a powerful French vessel off the South American coast. Though Napoleon is winning the war and the men and their crew face an onslaught of obstacles, including their own internal battles, "Lucky Jack" is determined that nothing will stop the Surprise from completing its mission. With Max Pirkis, Billy Boyd,

"We feel ourselves to be in good company with these men, and strangely jealous of their packed and salted lives." (The New Yorker)

"Oak solid and unsinkable, 'Master And Commander' is old-fashioned entertainment crafted with considerable care." (Empire Magazine)

"A gentleman's action movie." (Salon.com)

"'Master and Commander' is grand and glorious, and touching in its attention to its characters." (Roger Ebert)
