Carnal Knowledge (55th Anniversary Screening - Hosted by Oz Perkins)
Local filmmaker Osgood Perkins (LONGLEGS, THE MONKEY, KEEPER) is both a longtime friend of the Rio Theatre and now, one of the Park Theatre's team who have lent themselves to helping ensure the continued success of the venue. We are delighted to welcome Oz to the Park Theatre on Sunday, May 17 for a very special double bill featuring two iconic "Made in Vancouver" films, Robert Altman's enduring vision of the American Western, McCABE AND MRS MILLER, followed by Mike Nichols' dark comedy CARNAL KNOWLEDGE. Both titles were released in 1971, and shot on location at the same time in the City.
Nice guy Sandy (Art Garfunkel) and charming schemer Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) meet as college roommates in the late 1940s. Sandy woos and eventually marries the sweetly virginal Susan (Candice Bergen) without knowing that she had cheated on him with Jonathan. Years later, his marriage faltering, Sandy attempts to mimic Jonathan's promiscuous womanizing, while the misogynistic Jonathan finally tries his hand at monogamy with the gorgeous but emotionally needy Bobbie (Ann-Margret). With Rita Moreno.
"Carnal Knowledge' shocked audiences in 1971. It might shock them even more in 2022. Before toxic masculinity was even a term, Mike Nichols and Jules Feiffer explored the subject with such savagery and precision that, even half a century later, the film retains its power to unnerve almost everyone who sees it.” (Mark Harris, author of 'Mike Nichols: A Life')
"Stays within the universe of its characters, and inhabits it totally. And within that universe, men and woman fail to find sexual and personal happiness because they can't break through their patterns of treating each other as objects.... Clearly Mike Nichols' best film." (Roger Ebert)
The 2022 restoration process involved a painstaking recovery of the three primary color original elements; the original negative was very nearly beyond repair with uneven colors and areas damaged by mildew. Studiocanal worked alongside Technicolor Hollywood, which combined the Magenta, Yellow, and Cyan elements on a 4K scan from which VDM could proceed with the restoration.
